Radiofrequency Ablation is a thermal ablation of specific nerves that are targeting pain. This helps with joint pain where maybe cortisone injections were unable to provide long-term pain relief. The improvement in pain can last between 9 to 15 months with this therapy where as a cortisone injection can last weeks to months at the most.
Before performing an ablation on the nerve, we test the nerve with an anesthetic medication to make sure we’ve identified the correct nerves that are driving the pain. Once those nerves are identified, the ablation is performed with a probe, usually under light sedation.
