What is Peripheral Nerve Stimulation?
Peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) is a minimally invasive treatment designed to relieve chronic, localized nerve pain by delivering gentle electrical pulses directly to the affected nerve. This involves placing a small wire near the targeted nerve, which helps block pain signals from reaching the brain.
The patient undergoes a 5 to 6-day trial of the therapy before we determine if it’s a good long-term strategy for them. We implant temporary leads and allow the patient to go home and see if it makes an impact on their function. If we find the trial successful, we make plans for a permanent implantation in the future.
What makes it a good treatment option:
- Targets localized pain directly at the source for precise relief
- Minimally invasive with no need for major surgery
- Quick recovery time
- Reversible and adjustable
- The system can be removed or fine-tuned as needed
- Trial period available to test effectiveness before permanent implantation
- Improves mobility and function, helping patients return to normal activities
- Low risk of complications compared to more invasive procedures like spinal surgery
What conditions does it treat:
- Post-surgical nerve pain
- Shoulder pain
- Knee pain
- Occipital neuralgia
- Chronic low back pain
- Peripheral neuropathy – in specific nerves
